A Manager’s Checklist for Long-Term Success
In my previous article, “The Myth of the First 90 Days”, we discussed the importance of making an immediate impact as a new engineering manager. To further support leaders in their journey to success, I’m sharing a comprehensive checklist I’ve compiled over my 15-year career. This list encompasses various management aspects, including processes, technology (relevant for engineering managers), rituals, and principles.
It’s important to note that this checklist isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The items are not sorted or prioritized, as the importance of each element can vary greatly depending on your specific context, team needs, and organizational goals. Not every item needs to be implemented in every company or phase of your management journey. Gradual implementation is critical to adequately incorporating these practices.
This is my personal checklist, and it’s far from complete or universally applicable. If you find this checklist helpful, I invite you to share your items and experiences. You can view a live version of the list here.
As you review the list, consider which items are most relevant and impactful for your current situation and prioritize accordingly.
Let’s dive into the categories and items that can help set you up for success in your management role.
